Here are 5 Mistakes You May Be Making While Washing Your Face

Washing your face seems to be the simplest step in your routine right? Well, it’s not as simple as it seems. The techniques and products you use make a huge difference in how well you’ve cleaned off the day’s dirt and makeup – but also how healthy your skin looks and feels after. Here are the top 5 mistakes you may be making while washing your face.

Water is Way Too Hot

Warm water always feels good but when the water is too hot then it can be extremely drying to the skin-stripping it of its natural oils. Over stripping the skin can cause inflammation and redness, especially from people will sensitive skin. Use lukewarm water instead!

Scrubbing to Hard

Physically exfoliants (scrubs) are vital when it comes to healthy, soft skin. However, over scrubbing can cause some serious skin issues. Over exfoliating with a physical scrub can cause red and inflamed skin that are more risk of flare-ups and breakouts. A key to safe exfoliating is using a a chemical exfoliant. We always recommend a glycolic treatment pad or a combined salicylic acid/glycolic acid toner. Incorporate a gentle exfoliant into your routine daily.

You Not Removing Everything

This is a common problem for makeup wearers. Not cleaning everything off properly can create clogged pores and acne (and nobody wants that!). A great way to ensure a full cleanse is to either double cleanse, which entails starting with an oil cleanser and following up with a water-based cleanser.  Our salicylic acid cleanser combines salicylic acid in gentle coconut oil for effective cleansing without stripping the skin. A different method that we approve of is to use a makeup wipe and then cleanser with your usual cleanser after. You can always follow up with a toner to ensure a fully cleansed clean face!

Washing To Frequently

Washing your face too often can strip your skin of its natural protective barrier making your skin more sensitive to environmental factors, less moisture retention, and overtime cause early signs of aging. We recommend washing your face in the morning and night. If you happen to work out or sweat heavily throughout the day, go for a gentle cleanser or micellar water.

You’re Using the Wrong Type of Cleanser

There are two types of cleansers that could be wrong for your skin. The first one is a body wash or hand soap. These soaps have heavy amounts of detergents, fragrances, and ingredients that aren’t meant for our face, therefore it can strip the skin of its natural oils and compromise the skin barrier.

The second reason why a cleanser could be wrong for you is that it’s wrong for your skin type. For example, someone who has oily/acne-prone skin should be using a cleanser with salicylic or glycolic acid. If you have sensitive or dry skin type then a gentle cleanser such as our gentle chamomile cleanser is going to be best.
